If you wish to visit on your own, here are some recommendations: First and foremost, get your Machu Picchu entrance ticket in advance to avoid long lines. Next, book your train from either Poroy or Ollantaytambo station. If your train departs from Ollantaytambo, you’ll need to arrange a private transfer from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. Train companies also offer a combined bus and train service, but the wait time is longer. In Aguas Calientes, you should purchase a tourist bus ticket from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu to save energy. Finally, hire a tour guide to provide information about Machu Picchu.
Other destinations in Cusco that you can visit with children include: Sacsayhuaman, Qenqo, Puca Pucara, Tambomachay, Tipon, Pikillacta, Chinchero, the Moray Terraces, the Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo, and Pisac. Several tours offer these destinations in both shared and private group options. And they’re ideal for visiting with children.
Tours like Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lake, the Seven Lakes of Ausangate, or Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain are not recommended, as the altitude can affect children.
